What is Defecation Proctography?

Defecation Proctography is a test that enables physicians to observe abnormalities in muscle function or coordination. This test is being employed by an insertion of barium paste into the rectum which contains a soft and metallic alkaline chemical. As the patient pass the barium paste he/she may go through a bowel movement. The barium is seen very clearly on X-rays that enables physicians to analyze the abnormalities mentioned above.

With the help of the defecation proctography, it is possible to find out that whether a rectal prolapse, a puborectalis muscle is not relaxing and delayed rectal emptying.
